Assessment Process
When you contact us we will take some time (either over the phone or online) to discuss the concerns you currently have for your child’s development of speech, language and communication skills. This will allow us to advise you on the best way forward and help us to match your child’s unique needs with the most appropriate therapist.
Then we will book you into an assessment appointment and send you confirmation of this, and all the necessary information by email.
You will be asked to complete a case-history form, (this will ensure that the therapist has appropriate background information on your child and will assist greatly in making an accurate assessment), and consent forms in order to agree to our terms and conditions etc. Completed forms need to be scanned and emailed back to the treating therapist prior to the appointment, or if not possible brought with you to the assessment appointment.
During the assessment your therapist will complete a series of formal and informal assessment tasks with your child. This will be a combination of activities, matched to your child’s age or developmental stage, including floor play, conversation, table top activities, games, and sometimes standardised assessment.
Your child will feel safe, have fun, and be encouraged. Your therapist will ensure that the session is relaxed and that your child gets an opportunity to do their very best. Assessment is as much about building a rapport with your child, as it is about discovering their strengths and weaknesses. We feel that your child must leave the sessions feeling they want to come back because ‘trust’ is the foundation of any successful future therapy process.
Your therapist will provide you with feedback during the session and be ready to answer any questions. If it is felt that this needs to be done without the child present then the therapist will be sensitive to this and book a later time to discuss findings.
Some assessment sessions may take longer than others so it is possible to book subsequent assessment sessions if they are needed. Having said this, our therapists are good at getting to the root of the matter quickly whilst having lots of fun.
We are able to contribute to an EHCP Assessment or Tribunal Process.
